My name is Jake Gunter, since 2004, I have dedicated my career to representing individuals who are injured or accused of crimes. With over 20 years of courtroom advocacy, I stand firmly with the underdog, ensuring that everyone has access to justice. My practice focuses exclusively on criminal defense and personal injury law. I have never represented businesses or wealthy individuals looking to profit further.
I concentrate solely on criminal defense and personal injury law. I do not engage in business-to-business transactions, nor do I represent insurance companies. While I occasionally handle cases for the U.S. Army as a prosecutor, my true passion lies in defending individuals. My clients often face overwhelming odds against well-funded insurance companies and government resources.
In early 2004, after passing the Michigan bar exam, I embarked on my legal career by starting a solo practice. At just 24 years old, I struggled to find a position with a law firm. The economy was poor, and my wife was pursuing her Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. Consequently, I decided to go solo in a challenging job market.
I rented office space from Attorney John R. Bailey in Ypsilanti, Michigan. With no clients or experience, I was determined to succeed. My first office chair was a bright orange piece I found on the side of the road. I also drove a truck without a muffler. Despite these humble beginnings, I remained committed to establishing myself as a lawyer.
Through the Ypsilanti Bar Association, I built connections with local attorneys and judges, which proved invaluable for my practice. Monthly dinners at Haab’s Diner allowed me to interact with other lawyers, including Judge Kirk W. Tabbey. He began appointing me to cases, enabling me to pay my bills while honing my legal skills.
Working on child welfare cases during my early years exposed me to the struggles of the poor and vulnerable. These experiences significantly shaped my legal philosophy. They emphasized the importance of defending those who cannot defend themselves. I fought tirelessly for my clients, often taking cases to jury trials. My dedication did not go unnoticed by judges, who appreciated my commitment.
Fast forward to 2024. I now exclusively represent individuals accused of crimes or injured through no fault of their own. As a partner at Howard Lewis & Petersen, P.C., a firm established in 1950, I uphold my commitment to advocacy. My journey from a solo practitioner to an experienced attorney has equipped me with the skills and determination needed to make a difference in my clients’ lives.
