So you got a Utah speeding ticket, and you’re trying to get the severity of that citation or infraction reduced with the city. You might be wondering what your next step should be, or what could happen if you go to a bench trial.
Consequences of a Utah Speeding Ticket
The good news is that you aren’t going to Jail on a speeding citation alone. The worst that can happen to you if you lose after a contested Infraction bench trial is having to pay a fine of up to $ 750.00. And most likely a far lesser amount.
Speeding Ticket Community Service instead of Fine
Community service may be offered to help pay off your ticket at $10.00 per hour if you can’t pay the ticket fine. However, don’t worry – community service isn’t required or can be required from a Utah speeding ticket. Depending on the Utah court, the judge will allow community service instead of paying the traffic fine. But don’t count on it.
Max Speeding Fine for an Infraction: $750.
Utah Speeding Bail Schedule. See State of Utah Uniform Fine Schedule. In order to keep a check on extreme decisions of judges, Utah has published a uniform fine schedule that lists all traffic offense, whether they are moving violations and what the recommended fine should be. Rarely will a judge deviate from the recommended bail (or fine) schedule. The Intent of the Utah Uniform Fine Schedule is to minimize disparity between like offenses and like offenders.
Traffic Accident Fines
A $30 accident fee may be added to your traffic ticket.
Failure to Appear or Pay within 14 days.
If you fail to appear to your hearing or pay your fine, a $50 increase to your bail fine will accumulate, and increase to $75 after forty days.
Mandatory Appearance Traffic Citations.
All traffic citations involving death or personal injury are mandatory court appearances. Even then, you can sometimes appear through an attorney when the judge waives your court appearance.
